Staunton River Battlefield State park is located in Charlotte and Halifax counties. Here an outnumbered group of Confederate soldiers held off and defeated invading Union cavalry whose goal was to destroy the nearby railroad bridge. Visitors to the park today can learn about the battle, see reenactments and living history programs, enjoy hiking and multiuse trails, and learn about the native Americans that once inhabited the area. This park is close to both Occoneechee and Staunton River state parks, which offer camping and more extensive hiking and multiuse trails.

Trails At This Destination

Battlefield Trail

The Battlefield Trail is a 1.2 mile, easy multi-use trail that takes visitors from the Clover Center to the Roanoke Station in Randolph, crossing the bridge in the process. This wide flat trail lies mainly on the old railroad bed that was the main reason why the battle was fought here. While on the trail one will pass old trenches and earthworks, the fort, the field where the battle took place, and several interpretive signs that talk about different aspects of the fighting.

Edgewood Nature Trail

The Edgewood Nature Trail is a .7 mile easy hiking loop that takes users through wooded areas west of the Clover Center and picnic shelter. This trail also passes a small overlook of a nearby duck pond as well as a large bird blind situated in an open field. This trail has some slight changes in elevation near the trail head but is still easy overall with raised boardwalks to facilitate travel in places.

Amenities At This Destination

Picnic Shelter

A large picnic shelter is located next to the Clover Visitor Center. It can accommodate up to 100 people and it has vending, electricity, lights, grills, and access to water. Restrooms are located nearby in the Clover Center. Contact the park for reservation details.The shelter can be rented from 9 A.M. to dusk (all day). It is a large shelter and is available weekends only from April 1 to June 15 and September 15 to November 15. The shelter is available seven days a week during the rest of the year.

Clover Center

The Clover Center at Fort Hill is a large, new structure that is funded by the nearby Clover Power Station. Inside this building are several interactive displays that chronicle the events of the battle. There are also many displays about life in both the Union and Confederate Armies, with many artifacts and replicas of guns, tools, and clothing. A large portion of this facility is also dedicated to educating visitors about the nearby power plant and about the benefits of electricity in the region. A small gift shop inside the store sells souvenirs.
