Interpretive programs include canoe trips on Taskinas Creek; kayak trips on the York River; fossil hikes; nature hikes/games; wildlife observations; marine life; night canoe trips; ghost night hikes; seine netting and estuarine life studies; fishing clinics; childrens programs; hay rides; Virginias State Parks: Your Backyard Classrooms; various workshops.

Educational Activities Amenities At York River State Park

Amphitheater

Amphitheater is located right behind the visitor center and is used mainly for park programming. This special offering can accommodate 100 people. It contains tiered bench seats, a stage and a partial view of the York. Wheelchair accessible. Call park, (757) 566-3036 for reservations.

Visitor Center

The Visitor Center at York River teaches about the value of the coastal estuary to the environment and about the areas historical significance by touring this facility. Activities in the center focus on the history, use and preservation of the York River and its marshes. A small wet lab, resource library and variety of equipment and animals are available for use by school groups for environmental education activities. The Visitor Center is located at the end of the main park road and overlooks the York River. A small gift shop is located here featuring souvenirs.

Virginia Native Plant Arboretum

The Virginia Native Plant Arboretum (Blue Bird Loop Trail), just west of the visitor center, is a short, paved, ADA accessible trail that gradually winds down to the Taskinas Creek dock. It features many native plants and interpretive signs identifying and describing them.

York River State Park Welcomes Margaret Prahasky John Gresham Introducing York River State Park's new Office & Administrative Specialist Margaret Prahasky	Twin Lakes State Park Hosts Lecture Series for Black History Month Zoe Rogers, Visitor Services Specialist On Saturday, February 11, 2012 Twin Lakes State Park will host a lecture series on the African-American Civilian Conservation Corps and African-American soldiers during the American Civil War.

The workshop is scheduled for Tuesday, March 6, 2012 at James River State Park's Visitor Center from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.	Join the Friends of Shenandoah River State Park Jaimie Lomasney, Visitor Services Specialist Become a member of the Friends of Shenandoah River State Park. Attend the next meeting on Sunday, Feb. 12 at 3 p.m. with a winter walk at Shenandoah River State Park with the group.

"The Wildlife Management areas are managed by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. What you heard is incorrect. Here is info about the change: Facility Use Permit Effective January 1, 2012, a Facility Use Permit will be required when using any Department-owned Wildlife Management Area or Fishing Lake. Such permit shall not be required for any person holding a valid hunting, fishing or trapping license or a current certificate of boat registration issued by the Department or persons…"

"I was there too with my sister and one of her friends from work. It was a great day. We walked the trail and the hills were quite intense. But we all finished an it was really fun for the first one. "
