Programs are offered Thursday through Sunday from Memorial Day through Labor Day and on some weekends during spring and fall. They include hikes, campfire programs, canoe floats, wagon rides, children's programs, crafts and more. The park also hosts educational programs during the school year, and outreach programs are available to schools in Amherst, Appomattox, Buckingham, Nelson and Prince Edward counties. The park can accommodate special requests with prior arrangements; call (434) 933-4395.

Educational Activities Amenities At James River State Park

Amphitheater

A natural open air amphitheater exists just off of the main park road. The stage faces a hillside that naturally amplifies sound. The theater has grass seating for 500 overlooking the stage with a back drop of a wetland and surrounding James River hills. Restrooms and parking are located nearby.

Visitor Center

A new visitor center/office building is open. The visitor center houses the park administrative offices and provides information for park visitors. An exhibit area will be opening in the Spring of 2012 featuring a large river aquarium.

Nature Center

The Nature Center is located within the Visitor Center. Here there are both displays and live animals in aquariums/terrariums that teach visitors about some of the local wildlife that they may see. Visitors should make sure they can identify the copperhead, rattlesnake, and deer tick as they might encounter these animals while on the trail.

Twin Lakes State Park Hosts Lecture Series for Black History Month Zoe Rogers, Visitor Services Specialist On Saturday, February 11, 2012 Twin Lakes State Park will host a lecture series on the African-American Civilian Conservation Corps and African-American soldiers during the American Civil War.	Project WET for Teachers Sarah Lankford Virginia State Parks and Project WET offering Professional Development Workshop for Teachers. The workshop is scheduled for Tuesday, March 6, 2012 at James River State Park's Visitor Center from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

"The Wildlife Management areas are managed by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. What you heard is incorrect. Here is info about the change: Facility Use Permit Effective January 1, 2012, a Facility Use Permit will be required when using any Department-owned Wildlife Management Area or Fishing Lake. Such permit shall not be required for any person holding a valid hunting, fishing or trapping license or a current certificate of boat registration issued by the Department or persons…"

"I was there too with my sister and one of her friends from work. It was a great day. We walked the trail and the hills were quite intense. But we all finished an it was really fun for the first one. "
