James River State Park has a cartop launch in the Canoe Landing area and a boat launch ramp at Dixon Landing. The float between Canoe Landing and Dixon Landing is 2 miles in length The water is fairly calm on this part of the James River with no rapids above a class I. River access can also be made at Bent Creek, 6 miles up river, and Wingina 6 miles down river. Visitors are reminded to check river conditions before launching and be safe boaters.There are many places along the James River where River Trail allows one to carry a small boat into the water. In addition there are designated boat launch areas at Dixon Landing and. by the livery. James River State Park has a canoe launch in the Canoe Landing area and a trailer boat launch at Dixon Landing. The park Outdoor Adventure Livery offers canoe, kayak, and bike rentals and also organizes float trips down the river as well as a shuttle service when you bring your own boat. The water is fairly calm at this part of the James River with no real rapids above a class I. Visitors are reminded to be safe boaters.
