Kayaking on the James River is nothing new to local Virginians but what is new is kayaking at Powhatan State Park. Located in Powhatan, Virginia, the park is only one year old and is a fabulous place to get the family outdoors to float down the James for an afternoon of fun, sun, and healthy living.

A quick break during a guided kayak trip offers relief from the heat!

Of course there are several places to kayak within Virginia State Parks. It doesn’t matter where you kayak, the point is to get out there and do it! If you’re not already a kayaker, it’s fairly quick and easy to learn. If you’re timid about trying it out alone consider a guided kayak tour available in several state parks, including Powhatan. Tour guides can offer safety tips and techniques to make you a better rider. The tours are led by experienced staff members that are also familiar with the park’s history. If you are interested in a guided tour, look up the park's daily programs.

Boating on the water is great for the mind and body. Just being on the water automatically puts you in a brighter mood. It can be a great alternative to routine exercise and it pulls your mind away from daily stress. The sceneries surrounding the water is incredible, surrounded by beautiful landscape, blue skies, and several landmarks.

Me just telling you all the great reasons to kayak won’t be enough, you have to go out and experience it yourself to understand. If you’ve kayaked before then you know the feeling, now I encourage you to kayak more often. It’s truly extraordinary. It’s also a great way to connect with nature, friends and family, and even yourself. So come on out to a Virginia State Park and feel the thrill yourself!
