September offers great opportunities to get out to a Virginia State Park to volunteer.

National Day of Service and Remembrance
Americans will come together to Commemorate the 9/11 attacks as a National Day of Service and Remembrance on and around September 11. This year marks the 12th anniversary.
Across Virginia, all of our Virginia State Parks will offer volunteer opportunities between September 7 and 11. These service projects provide opportunities for members of local communities to gather together and make a difference as a way of paying tribute to the victims, honoring those who responded in the aftermath, and rekindling the spirit of unity and service we all felt after the attacks.
Volunteer opportunities and the schedule vary by park. For a complete listing of the opportunities, please follow this link. For more information about the National Day of Service and Remembrance see the official sites here and here.
National Public Lands Day
September 28, 2013 marks the 20th anniversary of National Public Lands Day—the nation’s largest, single-day volunteer effort for public lands. More than 175,000 volunteers are expected at more than 2,200 sites in communities and parks around the nation and all of our Virginia State Parks will be hosting volunteer events.

Twice a year, Virginia encourages environmental stewardship volunteerism through its Stewardship Virginia program. In the fall, our parks offer volunteer events in September and October as part of Stewardship Virginia. Participants receive a certificate of appreciation from the Governor.

Our volunteer program is broader than the occasional group event like the ones discussed here. Read about the many opportunities on our website. You can sign up to be a volunteer there and select from existing opportunities as well as learn about some of our specialty volunteer programs. Does your civic or church organization want to come out and enjoy the park for a picnic? Did you know you can "earn" a shelter rental or camping for your group?
