Virginia State Parks

You never know how many lives you touch

With Virginia State Parks, staff and volunteers are the same when it comes to our family. We are close and we are strong. And when we lose one, we all feel loss. On March 20, 2013, Hungry Mother State Park lost a beloved volunteer in Virginia Williams

Celebrating birthday of Millard Williams while he volunteered as a camphost
One big family...

Virginia, and her husband Millard, have been volunteers with the Camp Host Program at Camp Burson in Hungry Mother State Park for the past three years. Originally from Smyth County, home of Hungry Mother, the couple wanted to give back to the community by spending their summer months being hosts at one of the parks busiest campground. Each camper that came through the campground was met by the Williams. If they had a need, the Williams were there.

Last summer when the campground was hit by straight line winds on the July 4th weekend, 2012, the Williams were checking on other campers, even though their personal camper was totaled.

Virginia was a wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She made a difference in our community, our park, and our lives. The Hungry Mother family wanted to take a moment and honor Virginia for all she has meant to all of us. We will miss you.
