Virginia State Parks

Family, Friends, Fun and Fido!

Pups just wanna have fun, and are allowed to at Virginia State Parks!

Getting outside is our domain, let us show you what fun is all about outside at Virginia State Parks!

I don't want to brag, but looking at a state park website for a neighboring state, I found they only had two state parks with cabins, and were very unpet-friendly. Why do I say that? Well in the FAQs it says:

Are pets allowed in the park?

Answer from a neighboring state park system (not Virginia): "Pets are permitted so long as they are on a leash no longer than 6 feet and under the constant control of the owner. Overnight, pets must be confined to the owner's tent or vehicle during quiet hours. Pets are strictly prohibited from entering any building, with the exception of service animals and authorized search and rescue dogs. Owners may be asked to remove dangerous or noisy pets from the park."

Now we come to Virginia State Parks

One of the great things about Virginia State Parks is that you can bring your four-legged loved ones along as well. Fido can come too but, of course, there are limits.

Pets are allowed in all Virginia State Parks. State regulations prohibit pets on public beaches and in public facilities (bathhouses, visitor centers, park offices, restaurants, etc.), and pets must be confined or kept on a leash no longer than six feet and kept under supervision while in the park. While pets are allowed at False Cape State Park, they generally are not permitted access through Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge, so be sure to call False Cape SP, (757) 426-7128, to verify access.

To avoid potential inconvenience, we ask that you bring proof of current rabies vaccination. This is strongly recommended in Virginia Beach where a rabies alert is in effect.

There is an additional nightly charge per pet for cabins and campsites. Assistance dogs are not considered pets hence are welcome in all facilities at no additional charge.

So for the same cost or less as a kennel, Fido can explore Virginia State Parks with the family!

Virginia State Parks has more than 500 miles of trails and convenient access to Virginia’s major waterways. Beaches, picnic shelters, family lodges, meeting facilities, festivals, concerts, nature programs, cultural happenings… the list goes on and on. From Cumberland Gap to the Atlantic Ocean, there’s something for everyone at Virginia State Parks.

Virginia State Parks provide comfortable and economical overnight accommodations, with 260 climate-controlled cabins and more than 1,700 campsites, ranging from primitive sites to developed sites with electric and water hookups. Many cabins are available year round.

So consider my small change to the Virginia State Parks motto this year

"FAMILY FRIENDS FUN and FIDO!"
