Hiking At Night

The "Dog Days of Summer" are here. It is neither comfortable nor safe to do much hiking when the temperatures get in the upper 90's with equally high humidity.

How does one enjoy the great outdoors in July? Come out to York River State Park and find out how!

York River State Park night hike

It is a different world at night

Night hiking is the answer. The temperature drops significantly as the sun goes down. Creatures such as deer and foxes tend to be more active in the cool of sunset as well. As it gets dark your eyes will adjust to the lower light and your hearing will be more sensitive to the slightest rustle in the woods bird calls. Evening and night are the domain of nocturnal creatures. Bats and owls will fly overhead while raccoons gather food along the shoreline.
