National Trails Day at Virginia State Parks

Virginia State Parks will be participating in National Trails Day® on June 2, 2012. With more than 500 miles of trails and access to water trails on the major rivers and lakes of Virginia, our 35 state parks are the perfect destination for everything from a strenuous hike, river paddle, or a casual walk through the woods.

Every Virginia State Park will feature special programming in support of this national event. High Bridge Trail State Park is featuring a 5K “Run for Your Life” race sponsored by Centra Southside Community Hospital. In partnership with Blue Ridge Mountain Sports Sky Meadows State Park is looking for volunteers to help with trail maintenance and offering a Hiking 101 program. Volunteers will receive water, snacks and lunch. Hungry Mother State Park is opening 5.7 miles of additional trails with the Clyburn Hollow Trail Loop system. From volunteer activities, to self-guided hikes, to ranger led programs, there is a park event that will appeal to all outdoor enthusiasts. Click here for a complete list of the special programs offered for the day.

America’s 200,000 miles of trails provide access to the natural world for recreation, inspiration and education. Trails provide opportunities to breathe fresh air, get hearts pumping, escape from daily stresses and maintain overall health.American Hiking Society's signature trail awareness program, National Trails Day® (NTD), inspires the public and trail enthusiasts nationwide to discover, learn about and celebrate trails while participating in outdoor activities, clinics and exhibits, and trail work projects. Outdoor enthusiasts, trail clubs, land management agencies, businesses and others come together the first Saturday of each June on National Trails Day to celebrate trails, recognize volunteers and maintain local trails.
