On May 5, 2012 New River Trail State Park and the Galax Department of Parks and Recreation will co-host the Dr. Ed Dannelly 10K run and 5K walk.
Race day registration is from 7:30 a.m. - 8:45 a.m. at the Dr. Ed Dannelly Fitness Park gazebo. Registration closes promptly at 8:45 a.m. Awards will be given to all 10K run overall winners and 10K age group winners. Both events will start and finish at the Dr. Ed Dannelly Fitness Park and follow the New River Trail. The 10K course is an out and back course. The course is entirely flat as it follows Chestnut Creek along the New River Trail.

Entry Fee: 10K Run $12.00 if postmarked by April 24, 2012 - $17.00 thereafter and on race day. 5K Walk $8.00. Both event entries include a commemorative race t-shirt. Contact the Galax Recreation Department at 276-236-3218 or click here for more registration information.
No awards will be given for the 5K.
The weekend prior to the race, April 28, 2012, the park will host a volunteer day. They are looking for volunteers to help at Dannelly Fitness Complex. This year the park is planning on mulching playground equipment and general cleanup. In addition, ADA compliant playground equipment has been ordered. If it arrives on time, volunteers will also be needed to help install this equipment. This volunteer event will take place on April 28, 2012 from 9 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
New River Trail is beautiful in the spring
New River Trail State Park is one of the two linear trails in the Virginia State Park system. The trail is 57-miles long and runs through Galax on the south end to Pulaski on the north end. Anyone interested in volunteering can call the park office at (276) 236-8889 or visit our website.
