America's State Parks is sponsoring a nationwide program in our state park systems to encourage a healthy lifestyle by sponsoring family-friendly First Day Hikes on January 1, 2012. All of our state parks are participating with either a staff or volunteer led hike or a self-guided hike. Some parks are even offering both!
This is a great start for the New Year for the entire family! Virginia State Parks are great destinations for hiking and other physical activities that are part of a healthy lifestyle.
As a further incentive, we are sponsoring a contest for those who participate. We will randomly select one winner from all entries for the grand prize of a week cabin state in a Virginia State Park. We will also give a number of annual passes to runner up entries.
You can enter by checking in using foursquare or Facebook Places. In order to participate in the contest you will need to authorize Place Punch to access your data so we will be able to track contest entries and notify you if you win. You can authorize either service in advance by clicking here. [As of Dec. 25 the sign up links are all set up.]
If you don't use either of those two geolocation social media services, you can also enter the contest by uploading a picture to our official Facebook or Google+ pages. You will also be able to enter the contest by loading the picture to your Flickr account with the tag VSPFirstDayHike or by tweeting us at @VAStateParks and use the hash tag #VSP1stDayHike. If you are not on any social media sites, email us the photo at firstname.lastname@example.org. Just be sure that your check-in, post, tweet, upload or email is before 5 p.m. on January 1, 2012 to count for the contest.

Okay, so maybe with our recent weather snow and ice will be unlikely
