Clean the Bay Day 2010

Saturday, June 5th is the 22nd Annual Clean the Bay Day sponsored by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. Most people think of the Chesapeake Bay as something off the east coast of Virginia but if you drive down I-81 you will most likely notice the sign that says "Leaving the Chesapeake Bay Watershed."

A watershed is "all the land that drains into a given body of water. This body of water can be a creek, pond, river or ocean." Sixty percent of Virginia is in the Chesapeake Bay watershed and two-thirds of its population lives there.

Few will argue that the Bay is sick. Streams, rivers and tributaries that feed into the Bay are polluted and seafood is much less plentiful. The Bay and its pollution is not just Virginia's problem. According to Wikipedia:

The Chesapeake Bay's drainage basin covers 64,299 square miles in the District of Columbia and parts of six states: New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia. More than 150 rivers and streams drain into the Bay.

The states continue to work on a comprehensive plan to reduce point and non-point source pollution but everyone can do their part. Five of our Virginia State Parks are sponsoring Bay Clean Up activities this weekend. Click on the event to get the specifics (some may require pre-registration). If you can't participate at one of our parks, find the nearest clean up on the Clean the Bay Day website.
