Fun Facts about Trees

After researching Odwalla's Plant a Tree program I thought maybe I should share some of the benefits of trees to everyone.  So here is my top ten list of fun tree facts:

1.  Trees renew our air supply by absorbing carbon dioxide and producing oxygen.  (I'm pretty sure everyone already knew that one, but I needed a number 1).

2.  One tree produces nearly 260 pounds of oxygen each year.  That means that two mature trees can supply enough oxygen annually to support a family of four.

3.  One acre of trees removes up to 2.6 tons of carbon dioxide each year.

4.  Leaves also absorb other pollutants such as ozone, carbon monoxide, and sulfure dioxide.

5.  Trees reduce the amount of urban runoff and erosion by storing water and breaking the force of rain as it falls.

6.  Trees in the landscape relax people, lower heart rates, reduce stress and make people feel good.

7.  The shade and wind buffering provided by trees reduces annual heating and cooling costs by $2.1 billion dollars each year.

8.  Houses surrounded by trees sell for 18 - 25% higher than houses with no trees.

9.  Trees are the longest living organisms on Earth.

10.  Trees cut down noise pollution by acting as sound barriers and if planted in the right spots can reduce noise pollution up to 10 decibels.

Remember to vote starting May 25th so that Virginia can benefit from all of the wonderful abilities trees possess, for us and our environment.  Plus, they just help add to the beautiful scenery at our many Virginia State Parks
