My trip to Occoneechee State Park was well worth the two hour drive to Clarksville, Virginia. Even though the park was in its off-season, there were a fair number of visitors. I was also surprised to see that Occoneechee cabins did not use keys and instead had number pads. Once we were settled, we did as we usually do and drove around the area to see any local attractions. Can you guess where we went? That's right...the John H. Kerr Dam. If you are wondering, those white specks are dozens of seagulls.
You may think going to see the dam is boring, but once you get there and see the massive structure it kind of makes you want to rethink being so close to it.
We began our Saturday morning geocaching around the park. Out of the three caches in the park we found the two harder ones. I guess the boys had had enough, so after an hour and a half I was overruled when attempting to find the last and supposedly easiest to locate cache. It was pretty cold and windy outside, but once I started geocaching I really didn't want to stop. It was neat to see the little toys and things children had left behind. My only advice is to stay on the trail as much as possible. Although we did find some quicker routes to the caches, they were not the easiest to trek.
We had our usual "Hobo Pack" dinner, however not everyone was pleased with their meal. Mine on the other hand was pretty yummy and tasted like meatloaf. Just shows you that they may be Eagle Scouts, but that doesn't mean they know how do to everything. And of course they wanted to blame it on the frozen hamburger patties we used. Here is the first step to a good and fully cooked "Hobo Pack".....fire, which equals hot hot coals. Once your fire dies down, add your "Hobo Pack" directly to the coals. You can however duplicate this effect by using the oven, but where's the fun in that?
The whole weekend was sunny and hovering around 50F. A little chilly for geocaching, but soon the hot summer days will be in full swing and I will be wishing it was winter again.
