False Cape State Park sits on property that was once the Wash Woods community of Virginia. This small farming community was home to hardy souls who eked out a living on the sandy soil, risked their lives fishing the turbulent Atlantic, and raised pigs in the coastal forests.
Now you can see what the areas where they have survived and what they have left behind.
On March 28, 2010 the park will offer a 3.5 hours tram/hike tour of the Wash Woods area. The tram will take you through Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge where you will see migrating waterfowl and songbirds. Then it will travel through the park's main trail where you might catch a glimpse of the elusive feral pigs that are descendants of Wash Woods livestock. A one mile (round trip) hike will take you to the Wash Woods cemetery and church ruins.
This is a wonderful opportunity to "catch a ride" into False Cape. Visitors who ride the tram in, must ride the tram out. The tram is open air so be prepared for forecasted weather. Reservations are REQUIRED at 757-721-2412. Meet at Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center Tram Stop. Cost is $8 adults; $6 children & seniors.
